Flywheel LINE

Inertial training engineered for performance

Flywheel training equipment is widely used in modern strength training and rehabilitation for its ability to generate eccentric overload and variable resistance. Because of this, flywheel devices require companion tools to monitor the actual force and amount of eccentric overload. Without measurement, you are simply guessing.

SmartCoach was the first system on the market designed to monitor flywheel training devices—originally invented by our co- founder Per Tesch. Building on this unique know-how, the SmartCoach Flywheel Line integrates professional inertial training devices with our signature performance monitoring system, delivering real-time feedback on every repetition.
The result is a new generation of flywheel machines: not just training equipment, but fully integrated, data-driven performance
stations for training and testing.

Flywheel to the Moon

The Science Behind the Technology

Flywheel training originated from space physiology research, where scientists developed inertial exercise devices to help astronauts maintain muscle and strength in microgravity. Today, the same technology is widely used in elite sports and rehabilitation.
Instead of traditional weights, flywheel training uses the inertia of rotating flywheels. During the concentric phase, the user accelerates the flywheel, storing kinetic energy that must be resisted during the return phase, naturally creating eccentric overload.
When combined with real-time performance monitoring, flywheel training allows coaches and practitioners to measure velocity, force, and power, enabling objective evaluation of training load and performance.
Few companies in the industry can claim the same level of scientific involvement as SmartCoach, with dozens of peer-reviewed publications citing our technology and many co-authored by members of our own team.
Interesting trivia: the European Space Agency (ESA) adopted flywheel technology for training in space (FWED), while NASA adopted pneumatic technology (ARED) inspired by Keiser®. Both of them are currently implemented onboard the International Space Station. SmartCoach is the only solution capable of measuring both these advanced technologies in addition to conventional weights.
